Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Rockhound Scout collects, how it’s used, and who else handles it. Rockhound Scout is operated by John Thompson dba Rockhound Scout (“we,” “us”).
What we collect
- Account information: your email address and sign-in credentials when you create an account.
- Purchase information: that you bought a scan pack, the date, and your remaining scan balance. Your card details are entered on Stripe’s payment page and are never seen or stored by us.
- Scan information: the region you pick, and any text you type into Custom search (such as a town, address, or what you’re hunting), with the date and time of each scan. We use this to run your scan, count your balance, and fix problems.
- Basic technical data: like your IP address and browser type, which our hosting and security providers process automatically when you use the site.
- Messages to us: anything you send when you email us for support.
We don’t collect your precise device location. If you type an address, we use that text to find nearby roads.
How we use it
- To run your scans and show your results
- To create and secure your account, and to track your scan balance
- To process payments and handle refunds and support requests
- To prevent abuse and keep the service working
- To meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations
We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t use advertising trackers on the site.
Who else handles your information
We use these service providers to run Rockhound Scout. Each handles data under its own terms and privacy policy:
- Stripe processes payments.
- Supabase stores account and scan-balance data.
- Cloudflare runs the service that connects the app to our AI provider and checks your balance.
- Anthropic provides the AI that writes the descriptions. The text of a Custom search, and the geologic details found for your scan, are sent to it. Please don’t put personal or sensitive information in Custom search.
- OpenStreetMap services (Nominatim and Overpass) turn the place you type into map coordinates and find nearby roads and creeks.
- Macrostrat supplies rock formation data for map locations we look up.
- GitHub Pages hosts the site, and Google Fonts supplies the site’s fonts, so both can see your IP address when your browser loads the page.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, or with a successor if the business is sold.
Saved results on your device
The app saves your most recent results in your browser so they’re still there if you reopen the page. That data stays in your browser and is cleared when you clear your browsing data.
How long we keep it
We keep account and purchase records for as long as your account is active and as needed for tax, accounting, and dispute purposes. You can ask us to delete your account and scan history (see below).
Your choices
You can ask us to see, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing RockhoundScoutApp@gmail.com. We may need to keep some records (like payment records) where the law requires it.
Security
We use reputable providers and reasonable safeguards, but no online service can be completely secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children
Rockhound Scout is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top.
